Sewage Damage - A Severe Threat to Human Life
Water has great powers in it. It has the capability to save as well as destroy life. Sewage damage is a situation where water starts to backflow. This situation can cause major risk to health of especially small children, elderly people or to those who have weak immune system or breathing problems. Sewage damage can cause life threatening illnesses because they have dangerous organisms in them like Hepatitis A which can cause respiratory disease, bacteria which cause Bacillary dysentery, and Salmonella which causes Balontidiasis.
In case of sewage damage one should dispose all kinds of porous materials like carpets, pads, upholstery, bedding, wicker, paper goods, or fabrics which cannot be cleaned. Sewage damage if not attended to immediately can pollute the entire environment by becoming a breeding ground for many microorganisms and bacteria. In such a case it is advisable to relocate from that area until professionals using specialized equipments repair the sewage damage.
If the sewage damage is affected in one particular area then it can be restored by draining out all the water, by cleaning and disinfecting. But in a situation where the sewage damage is a little more and supposedly the water had spilled out effecting some rooms of the building which has porous surfaces needs more rigorous treatment. The cleaning procedure will include lifting and washing the dirty carpet on both sides with hot water and disinfecting it. Other smaller affected items like cushions etc should be disposed. All contaminated objects should be examined thoroughly and dried before further use. Contaminated and porous walls should be disinfected.
In case where the sewage damage is in the main line of sewage system and had spread in a bigger area affecting both the building and the furnishings to a large extent, such a case requires immediate action. People can be threatened by pathogenic raw wastes that might have seeped in through the walls and furniture. The contaminated area should be evacuated and treatment should be done by expert only taking full care about their health and by using respirators with high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) cartridges, rubber boots, gloves, splash goggles, and protective clothes.
If, the sewage damage is of the main septic lines or if a structure is flooded with river water which contains sewage of a great amount of organic waste then a serious danger to human life. In this case there are several factors which are to be researched first before taking any action, for example the nature of contamination, the kind of water damaged materials (like porous, non-porous, synthetic etc), pathogens and allergens in the water, outdoor temperature and indoor humidity, organic water load, water volume. Sewage borne microflora like virus, bacteria, fungus, and parasites are of main concern in this situation. Even after the restoration some of the fungal and bacterial contaminants can cause health threats in the environment.
The important steps to be taken personally after sewage damage are flushing, washing with clean water and some strong solution, vacuuming, dehumidifying, and disinfecting while the severe cleaning up of larger areas should be left for the professionals only.
